AFRICA/IVORY COAST - For a different church, we need men and women who are determined and committed to change

Monday, 11 October 2021

Abidjan (Agenzia Fides) - "True change will only be possible by letting the action of the Holy Spirit intervene on the will of men and women to collaborate. If we want a different church, we need open minds, willing men and women, committed to change", said Fr. Donald Zagore, priest of the Society for African Missions (SMA) in reference to the Synod on synodality inaugurated yesterday, Sunday, October 10, 2021, by Pope Francis. "Saint Augustine says it well, God created us without us, but he cannot save us without us", continues Zagore. The Ivorian theologian wonders what impact the Synods on the family, on young people, on the Amazon have had on the life of the Church. "Has something new been born? Did they bring something different?", he writes. "This is a Synod that aims to build a different church from yesterday's. Pope Francis insists that through this universal encounter we come to a break with old practices. 'To have a Synod means walking on the same path, walking together'.
"The Synod on Synodality is held in each particular Church of the five continents. This is the first time in history. It is universal and involves Catholics all over the world. (DZ/AP) (Agenzia Fides, 11/10/2021)
