Maputo (Agenzia Fides) - "For some years now, we have been planning to open a community of the Little Missionary Sisters of Charity in Mozambique: now this dream has come true". This is what Sister Claudia Maria Rio said in an interview with Agenzia Fides, Superior General of the Little Missionary Sisters of Charity (PSMC) founded by Saint Luigi Orione, who arrived last month in Maputo with the first Orione Sisters who will operate in one of the poorest areas of the Mozambican capital.
"In this first phase - continues the Mother General - we can count on the support of the Sons of Divine Providence, who have been present for years with a Little Cottolengo in Maputo". "The presence of the Sisters in this work, explains Sister Claudia, in addition to giving us the opportunity to present ourselves as a complete Orionine Family in Mozambique, it will allow us to contribute to raising the level of assistance and internal accompaniment of the activities of Cottolengo: our task, she says, is to give continuity in different ways to the grace granted by our founder St. Luigi Orione. With the General Council - continues the sister - we considered the convenience of incorporating this new community into the Vice-Delegation of Our Lady of Hope of Ivory Coast because, despite the difference in language and distance, we believe that there is a greater cultural affinity and therefore the continuity of the service will be more guaranteed. We are already counting on the availability of some sisters of the vice-delegation". Don Orione's Little Cottolengo in Maputo offers access to health, education and care to more than 200 children, adolescents and adults with multiple disabilities, both physical and intellectual, who live in situations of risk or neglect in Maputo. The work of 700 volunteers and more than 300 employees guarantees the quality of life of the beneficiaries. In addition, on August 19, the Orionine Center was inaugurated in the Orionine structure, confirming the development and growth of the Orionine mission in the African Country.
"We were greeted with great joy by the local authorities and by the Bishop of the area - says Sister Claudia - and this is a good omen for our future in Africa. Our mission - she concludes - remains that of making the Little Cottolengo a space for evangelization and a place of charity". (ES) (Agenzia Fides, 9/10/2021)
