AFRICA/SOUTH SUDAN - The Bishop of Wau encourages the population to get vaccinated against Covid-19

Wau (Agenzia Fides) - "The coronavirus vaccine is not dangerous. To date, I have personally seen no negative effects since I received the first dose", said Msgr. Mathew Remijo Adam Gbitiku, bishop of the diocese of Wau, encouraging the entire population of South Sudan to get vaccinated.
The diocesan health coordinator, Dr. Jurel Payii Mamur said that one should not be afraid of the vaccine approved by the government and the World Health Organization (WHO) and confirmed that Msgr. Gbitiku received his first dose on September 7th with no consequences. "On September 7, 2021, together with the team from the Wau University Hospital, we went to vaccinate the Bishop and the priests who go to the diocese of Wau – we read in the note from the diocese sent to Fides.
We started with the bishop and we are continuing with all the priests and operators of the diocese to ensure and protect the health of all".
Mgr. Gbitiku urged all the Bishops of South Sudan to encourage their priests to get vaccinated, as this is the only weapon to prevent Covid-19. "We could not get the first delivery of AstraZeneca which arrived a few months ago because we were not ready due to pastoral activities in the dioceses. We thank God for having this second chance", the prelate reiterated.
The vaccination program was organized by the Health Office of the Diocesan Secretariat with the help of the Ministry of Health of Wau.
According to statistics, there are currently 11,831 infections in the country, while 297 cases were registered in the weeks from 8 to 21 September. (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 22/9/2021)
