Veracruz (Agenzia Fides) - After the wave of Haitian emigrants that has occurred in recent days in the state of Veracruz, many of whom come from Tapachula (see Fides, 16/9/2021), which is located on the border with Guatemala, the Catholic Church has asked for solidarity and respect for these people in transit in Mexican territory. The Bishop of the Diocese of Veracruz, Mgr. Carlos Briseño, asked the immigration and security authorities not to treat these migrants as criminals.
Mgr. Briseño, at the end of Sunday Mass on September 19, asked that the operations carried out by the National Institute for Migration to interrupt the journey of dozens of Haitians to the United States be carried out within the framework of the law and that their human rights respected. He recognized that they are families who are fleeing poverty and the problems of their country and therefore have the right to be treated with dignity.
He also recalled that the different parishes, to the best of their ability, offer concrete help to migrants of different nationalities. To these are added groups of Christians and Catholics who, in the name of humanitarian assistance, also offer support of various kinds, with food, clothing, medicine or shelter. "The Church's position is to protect the lives of these people and help them while they are on our territory, every human being requires humanity.
