Davao (Agenzia Fides) - The Scalabrinian Missionary Sisters open a new mission in the Philippines, in Davao. After Quezon City and Manila, Davao is the third most populous city in the Philippines: It has more than one and a half million inhabitants and is located on the island of Mindanao, which has a total of more than 24 million inhabitants. The city is the first destination of many domestic and foreign migrants and is an area with strong interreligious integration: Catholicism (57%) and Islam (23.4%) are the most widely practiced religions here. With their work, the Scalabrini Missionary Sisters want to support migrants according to the charisma of their institute and also accompany them in their training, their educational needs and their access to health services. "The Philippine State has more than 100 million inhabitants of various ethnic groups", said the Delegate Superior for Asia, Sister Elizabeth Pedernal. Davao and its metropolitan area, located in the South, attract Chinese, Koreans, but also many internal migrants who are looking for new opportunities. Our task will be to welcome them, protect them, integrate them and promote their life projects, according to Christian teaching and that of our Pope Francis". The missionary sisters also dedicate themselves to the reintegration of Filipino returnees from abroad. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 14/9/2021)
