Managua (Agenzia Fides) - "Aware of the critical health situation we are facing, I invite you, with faith and trust in Divine Providence, with serenity and great responsibility, not to let your guard down in observing the basic protocol (use of masks, disinfecting hands and recommended physical distance); a protocol that must be followed both on a personal level and in the liturgical and ecclesial spaces that are under our ecclesial responsibility. It is the duty and duty of all of us, pastors and faithful, to join efforts to care for our health and to give witness to a responsible and supportive Church", said the Archbishop of Managua, Cardinal Leopoldo Brenes, in a circular addressed to all the faithful of the Archdiocese, published in recent days.
In the letter, the Archbishop reminds that the churches and chapels "will be open at appropriate times, depending on the circumstances in each parish, in accordance with the general protocol given and the rules specifically set out in each parish". He also points out in this context that if the particular situation of a community or church institution requires the implementation of an emergency plan, the respective pastoral councils and authorities must be consulted in order to assess the respective circumstances and to apply the appropriate measures in the community.
The Cardinal recalls that liturgical celebrations and pastoral activities "must be carried out with creativity, in order to balance health care with the spiritual attentiveness of the faithful". it is time to resort to alternative means of communication for pastoral activities and to limit the duration and number of participants in the activities if necessary.
The Archbishop asks the faithful to stand by their parish priests during this time, to enable the use of the church buildings and to make use of the alternatives offered by the liturgy. "Let us pray and implore from Christ and his Blessed Mother their protection, their help and strength, in these times of trial, so that we can do everything 'in Christ who gives us strength' (Php 4,13)" concludes Cardinal Brenes.
