AFRICA/TANZANIA - Third wave of Coronavirus: the President of the Republic urges the Bishops to support the Country

Dar es Salaam (Agenzia Fides) - "Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Catholic Church has played a very important role in the fight against this disease", said the President of the Republic of Tanzanian, Samia Suluhu Hassan, addressing the Bishops of the Episcopal Conference of Tanzania (CET). "Now that we find ourselves facing the third wave, it is important not to let go", reads the note sent to Agenzia Fides.
In his speech at the Catholic Secretariat of Kurasini (Dar es Salaam), President Samia urged the Bishops to continue to remind the faithful to protect themselves and take all the precautions indicated by health experts in the country and in the world. It is the first time that the government of Tanzania has openly reported the prevalence of the pandemic in the country since May 2020. Without providing statistics, the president said it was important to keep our guard up to prevent the pandemic in an attempt to prevent further deaths. Samia recently visited the Mwananyamala hospital in Dar es Salaam, where patients infected in this third wave are hospitalized. "We already have patients diagnosed with the virus", he explained. "It is important to pray to God to continue to protect us", he said inviting citizens to be vigilant and urging religious leaders to take appropriate actions to educate public opinion on Covid-19.
