AMERICA/PERU - Oxygen concentrators from Spain to the Peruvian forest

Toledo (Agenzia Fides) - The Spanish Archdiocese of Toledo has sent three oxygen concentrators (small machines that obtain oxygen from ambient air) to Peru, to treat patients with Covid-19. The Pastoral Care of Health and the Diocesan Missionary Delegation of Toledo continue to work to alleviate the consequences of Covid-19 for those most in need in the Prelature of Moyobamba (Peru). The Prelature of Moyobamba is entrusted by the Holy See to the Archdiocese of Toledo (Spain). The patron is the Apostle Santiago. With the Bull "Romanus Pontifex" of March 7, 1948, Pius XII separated the department of San Martín from the diocese of Chachapoyas and created the Prelature of Moyobamba, the first in Peru, making it a suffragan of the metropolitan archdiocese of Trujillo. According to the Papal Yearbook, the territorial Prelature of Moyobamba has a population of 763,795 inhabitants, of whom 645,000 are Catholics, in an area of 39,419 sq km. There are 28 diocesan priests and 13 religious, 15 religious non-priest and 86 nuns. The Catholic Church runs 11 charitable and assistance institutes. Thanks to the donations of the company Linde Healthcare Spain Ricardo Lavandeira Adán, three oxygen concentrators were sent to Peru, with the collaboration of the Delegation of the Córdoba missions.
Those responsible for this initiative are the Pastoral Care of Health and the Diocesan Mission Delegation of the Archdiocese of Toledo. The latter recalls, in the note sent to Fides, that the situation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has further aggravated the situations of poverty that already existed in the Prelature of Moyobamba, as indeed in many parts of the world. In particular, in the San Martín region, located in the Peruvian jungle, the possibilities for development have been significantly reduced. Health care has been put under pressure, with very limited resources, especially for the treatment of respiratory diseases derived from the Covid-19 pandemic. It is not the first time that the Toledo Missionary Delegation has supported urgent initiatives related to the different phases of the pandemic in many parts of the world, thus contributing to the missionaries' work.
