Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - Faced with the indifference of the authorities, "a responsible, peaceful, participatory citizenship is necessary, willing to put aside sterile ideologies" to seek better paths for everyone: reiterates, a few days before the most significant elections in the country's history the Archdiocese of Mexico, in its publication "Desde la Fe", sent to Fides. Through their participation in the elections, citizens can "put aside, with their vote, those who have not fulfilled their commitment to serve all Mexicans in times of greatest need and have done nothing to solve problems".
The weekly's text highlights that the elections take place at a time when the country suffers from a series of historical problems, such as social inequality, which generates poverty, the increase in organized crime, which generates insecurity, violence and corruption. The conclusion highlights that "this electoral process, which will end on June 6, 2021, is one of the most violent in recent years. At the time of publication of this weekly, according to press reports, 89 politicians have been assassinated since September 2020 to date 89 have been murdered from September 2020 to date".
At least 18 candidates withdrew their candidacy this year due to fear, threats or violence, according to consulting firm Etellekt.
Many candidates must wear a bulletproof vest before going to an election rally. According to the national press, the drug gangs want to place their candidates in the municipalities, in order to operate without the interference of the police, and thus extort money from local companies, so they come to force the other candidates to withdraw from running as candidates. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has initiated a candidate protection program, acknowledging that the violence is alarming. The government has assigned armed bodyguards to some candidates.
On Sunday, June 6, more than 90 million Mexicans will completely renew the Chamber of Deputies and 30 local parliaments, as well as elect 15 governorates and 1,900 municipal councils, for this reason they have been defined as the largest elections in the history of the country. Aware of the importance of the event for the present and the future of the country, the Bishops have repeatedly invited the national community to make the best option, and to participate in voting responsibly (see Fides, 12,19,27/5/2021).
