ASIA/IRAQ - At least 34 Christian candidates will participate in the 2021 political elections

Baghdad (Agenzia Fides) - At least 34 Christian candidates on the electoral lists will compete for the 325 seats in the Parliament in the next Iraqi political elections, scheduled for next October 10. Ankawa.com website has announced the names of the 34 Christian candidates, who will only be partially included in party lists (the electoral system also provides for the presence of individual candidates competing for individual seats).
The campaign for the next Iraqi legislative elections has already begun.
Around 44 coalitions are expected to participate in the electoral round, in which 267 parties are grouped. The candidates could be more than 3500, of whom only a little more than a thousand will be presented by parties and coalitions (although checks are still underway on the eligibility for the electoral competition of each single aspiring parliamentarian).
Coalitions that competed in the previous 2018 elections have crumbled over time.
Definite coalitions have not yet emerged among the Parties linked to the majority Shiite community. Analysts envision a consistent retreat of the Da'wa Party - which for more than three decades has been instrumental in the choice of Prime Ministers - and an affirmation of the coalition headed by Shiite leader Muqtada al Sadr. The Iraqi electoral system reserves a minimum quota of 5 seats in Parliament for Christian minorities, assigned individually in the 5 provinces of Baghdad, Kirkuk, Erbil, Dohuk and Nineveh.
