Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - On the solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, recalling the mandate of the risen Jesus to his disciples, "Go and proclaim the Gospel to every creature" (cf. Mt 16.15-20), the Church celebrates the World Day of Social Communications , which in 2021 celebrates its 55th edition. In the message for the occasion, entitled “Come and see (Jn 1:46). Communicating by meeting people where and how they are", Pope Francis invites us to "get out of the comfortable presumption of the 'already known' and go and see, be with people, listen to them, collect the suggestions of reality, which will always surprise us in some of its aspects". Based on Pope Francis' message for this day, the Communication Department of the Venezuelan Bishops' Conference (CEV) has organized a campaign on social networks to underline the courage of those engaged in the work of proclaiming the truth and denouncing injustices.
According to the note from the CEV sent to Fides, the goal of the campaign is to motivate communicators a sense of social commitment for the common good of people, based on the educational and informative responsibility that every communication professional has, which influences public opinion and critical thinking in society. The Communication Department of the Venezuelan Episcopate recognizes the importance of communication as a transversal axis of society, therefore it intends to stimulate communicators to act in a positive sense, and invites those involved in social media to direct their communication policies "towards the defense and promotion of the values of the person, the family, fair information and freedom of expression", as the Plenary Council of Venezuela pointed out.
