Lima (Agenzia Fides) - In Peru, the Episcopal Commission for Catechesis and Biblical Pastoral Care is responsible for the animation and formation of catechists in the different ecclesiastical jurisdictions. It gathers more than 5,000 leaders of catechist groups, which are more than 50,000 in total, and has been present for 20 years in catechetical formation centers in the different dioceses of the country.
Every year it organizes the "Week of the Catechist" to offer a space for formation and exchange of new experiences in the field of catechesis for children, young people and adults. In Peru, parish catechesis does not always coincide with preparation for the celebration of the sacraments. Catholic schools also do their part in school catechesis for the little ones, while parish centers cater mainly for young people and adults. The catechists are fmostly young, but there are also entire families committed in the parishes as family catechists and to guide young engaged couples towards the sacrament of marriage.
