Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - The Church in Venezuela and the World Food Program, the United Nations World Food Program, will work together to ensure school meals for one and a half million children. This is what emerged from the meeting between Cardinal Baltazar Porras, Archbishop of Merida, and David Beasley, Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP). The two met on Tuesday 20 April to exchange information on the situation in Venezuela. On April 18, Beasley arrived in the South American country to start the operations of the UN agency. The next day he met with President Nicolás Maduro and opposition leader Juan Guaidó.
"We appreciate the great support we have received from all parties who have agreed with these principles", said David Beasley, on behalf of the WFP, which in Venezuela aims to provide full school meals to children, especially children in kindergartens and special schools and will support the reactivation of school canteens and the further training of school staff in relation to food safety.
"With this agreement, WFP will implement its plan to progressively reach 1.5 million school children in areas most affected by food insecurity", said Beasley.
The meeting with Cardinal Baltazar Porras pays particular tribute to the committed social pastoral work of the Catholic Church in Venezuela, both at the school level (with school canteens) and at the level of accepting migrants with young children. This also includes the food aid provided by the Caritas agencies (see Fides, 20/1/2021). (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 22/4/2021)
