Buenos Aires (Agenzia Fides) - Bishop Eduardo Horacio García of San Justo (Gran Buenos Aires) and his priests wrote a letter to the Mayor of La Matanza, Fernando Espinoza, and to the Police Deputy of La Matanza, Chief Inspector Walter Fernández Mamani, asking for more security.
In their letter, the Bishop and the priests of Matanzas complain that the problem of insecurity "has worsened in recent months" and that robberies, rape and crime deaths occur almost daily in this neighborhood on the outskirts of Buenos Aires.
"For all this, we ask that the resources necessary for real crime control be provided, while at the same time we pray that the Lord will protect you in your noble task of giving safety and tranquility to children, women, men, the elderly, families and parishes in our neighborhood", reads the letter sent to Fides.
The letter also lists the parishes where thefts and violence have been recorded: San Pío X, Stella Maris, Catedral, Maria Auxiliadora, San Alberto, San Roque IC, San Pantaleón and others are affected. Some community facilities would therefore have to remain completely closed at certain times.
Women are most affected by the general increase in violence: according to the Lucia Perez Observatory, there were 59 femicides in the first few months of 2021 up to February 21. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 24/3/2021)
