Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - Political vocation cannot be reduced to belonging to a party or to supporting an ideological postulate from a platform. Politics, on the other hand, implies a "vocation to service". This service can only be offered if the person is willing to listen, to dialogue without denigrating the other and knows how to be creative in building consensus and agreements. This is what Mgr. Alfonso Gerardo Miranda Guardiola, Auxiliary Bishop of Monterrey and Secretary General of the Mexican Episcopate Conference said who participated in a forum organized by the "Red de Acción y Etica Política", which brought together important leaders from various sectors, to reflect on the mission of those who are called to work in the political field.
In his speech, sent to Fides, the Bishop underlined a key concept in the vocation of all those who have a responsibility in public service: the search for national reconciliation for the construction of the common good. "We are living in a turbulent period in the history of humanity and of the country - declared the Bishop. The pilgrim Church, assisting the poor, the sick and responding to the needs of the most different types of vulnerable people, touches the reality of millions of people who currently live in the pain and confusion of the current context, even more so in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. In particular, I turn my gaze to the people of Mexico, afflicted by the scourge of death, violence, marginalization and social polarization in many areas. I see with concern that the Mexican nation, a global example of a united and supportive people, is gradually fragmenting, due to political, economic or ideological interests".
This reality, the Bishop reiterated, "instead of bringing us to fruitless complaints, should push us to engage in a determined service of others", as Pope Francis affirmed with renard to the health emergency. "I therefore take the liberty of exhorting all of us who participate in this meeting to look up to heaven and find - through the culture of encounter - a path of reconciliation which allows us to build bridges and walk together towards peace, justice and justice".
The path of reconciliation "is arduous, tortuous and requires an open mind and a wise spirit", acknowledged Mgr. Miranda Guardiola, who cited as an example also for Mexico, the words of Pope Francis in his recent trip to Iraq, a land dramatically divided by religious conflicts and wars, where there can be no peace if we do not recognize ourselves as brothers and sisters, and, forgetting the misunderstandings and wounds of the past, moving from conflict to unity.
The Secretary General of the Bishops' Conference of Mexico finally launched this appeal to all legislators: "Politics, if conducted with fundamental respect for the life, freedom and dignity of persons, can truly become an eminent form of charity. Good politics, like the hope spoken by the poet Charles Péguy, is like a fragile flower that tries to blossom among the stones of confrontation and violence". (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 11/3/2021)
