Rome (Agenzia Fides) - "The Covid pandemic must not lead us to turn a blind eye to an unprecedented economic and social crisis and to human trafficking, which continues to affect the poorest countries in the world in particular. More than half of the migrant women are victims of psychological and physical abuse, almost four in ten were tortured. These figures make it clear how important it is to help women who find themselves in situations that make them particularly vulnerable here in Italy but also in the rest of the world. Even during this pandemic!",said Sister Neusa de Fatima Mariano, Superior General of the Scalabrinian Missionary Sisters, referring to a study by the Ismu Foundation/The Tree of Life based on the 2019 data.
"These figures show that the politicians' agenda should not only include coping with the coronavirus crisis, even if this is paramount and important," added Sister Neusa. Women play a fundamental role in the family, in raising children, in the desire for healing and growth that must mark this historic moment.
Thanks to the support of the Holy Father, we were able to set up accommodations, such as those opened in Rome as part of the “Chaire Gynai” project, in which we give women in need the opportunity to start a new life and to integrate" (see Fides, 10/1/2018; 6/4/2019).
Sister Neusa finally launches an appeal: "If on the one hand social networks welcome, integrate, protect and promote, on the other hand States around the world must also take a clear line in the fight against trafficking, trafficking and violence against women. Protecting them means protecting life, always, because a world without women would be sterile, because they know how to look at everything with maternal eyes that see beyond and are capable of giving birth to universal solidarity and fraternity from within the very drama of emigration, in view of a new heaven and a new earth!".
