Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - In North Kivu, the eastern province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where on February 22nd, the Italian ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Luca Attanasio, his Italian bodyguard Vittorio Iacovacci and the Congolese driver Mustafa Milambo (see Fides, 23/2/2021) were killed, there have already been further massacres of innocent civilians.
"It is with great dismay that we report three attacks by the ADF/ MTM terrorist movement between Tuesday, February 23rd and Wednesday, February 24th, 2021", reported the local human rights organization CEPADHO (Center for Studies for Peace, Democracy and Human Rights ) in a message to Fides.
The militias of the AFD (Allied Democratic Forces), originally from Uganda, have been calling themselves "Madinat Tawhid wa-l-Muwahidin (MTM)" for some years now, even if its alleged "affiliation" to the Islamic State is the subject of controversy and speculation.
According to CEPADHO, at least 23 civilian victims have died in the attacks in the areas of Beni (in North Kivu) and Irumu (in Ituri) in the past few days: 17 in Kisima in the Ruwenzori district, one in Oicha (capital of the Beni region), 2 in Kokola in the Beni-Mbau district and 3 in Kpolimumu in the Irumu district.
Previously, five civilians were killed in a massacre in Musandba (5 km northwest of Oicha) in the Beni-Mbau district and a series of ambushes on the Beni to Kasindi road. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 27/2/2021)
