San Salvador (Agenzia Fides) - Efforts to approve an amendment to the constitution to recognize the right to water and food as human rights in El Salvador are making progress.
After access to water and sanitation was recognized as a human right in October 2020 (see Fides 17/10/2020) and the legislative assembly voted on January 28 with 57 votes out of 84 for the amendment of Article 69, which now includes access to food recognized as a human right. Now the Catholic Church and the Alliance for the Amendment of the Constitution of El Salvador demand in a document shared yesterday on the social media of the Archdiocese of San Salvador the "signing of the commitment to the implementation of human rights with regard to water and food" by the political parties.
The document called for the public commitment of the signatories to vote for the final reform of Articles 2 and 69 relating to these rights. While the Catholic Church was disseminating this document on its social media, members of the Alliance for Reforms launched a public rally on February 22nd and 23rd, during which the petition was delivered to party headquarters.
