Lima (Agenzia Fides) - The chairman of the Peruvian Bishops' Conference (CEP) condemned the recent irregularities in vaccination. "The outrage caused by these incidents is increasing because it ignores those who have made great sacrifices on the front lines for more than a year in the face of this pandemic. Doctors, nurses, police officers, officials, volunteers continue to die, while certain groups are pursuing their own interests", reads the statement sent to Fides.
In Peru, it became known that, despite the established vaccination protocols, state officials vaccinated themselves and their families. Peru's President Francisco Sagasti said he was "outraged and angry", describing the sentiment of many Peruvians.
This scandal has already resulted in the resignation of two ministers (Health and Foreign Relations) and an official investigation by the government will follow.
Peru was one of the Latin American countries most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, recording more than 400,000 deaths and more than 1.24 million infected to date. Yesterday, Ash Wednesday, the Peruvian Church wanted to pay tribute to all healthcare professionals who died of coronavirus infection.
The rite was presided over by the Chairman of the Peruvian Bishops' Conference and the Council of Latin American Bishops' Conferences (CELAM), Bishop Miguel Cabrejos Vidarte OFM. In his prayer, on behalf of the entire Peruvian Church, he reminded the faithful of the country that the deaths of 315 doctors and 112 nurses at the service of the community deserve special recognition.
