Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – On February 2, 2021 the Holy Father appointed as bishop of the diocese of Guruè, Mozambique, the Reverend Inácio Lucas, of the clergy of Nacala, until now vicar general of the same diocese.
Msgr. Inácio Lucas was born on 21 September 1969 in Napaco, in the province of Nampula. After his primary and secondary studies in Napaco, Namirôa and Mirrote (1976-1984), he continued his formation in Carapira, Monapo, in the Catholic missionary school of São Daniele Comboni (1985-1987).
In 1988 he studied at the São Carlos Lwanga Preparatory Seminary in Nampula. He studied philosophy in the Seminary of Matola (1990-1992), and theology in the Seminary of Maputo (1993-1996).
On 21 June 1998 he received priestly ordination, and was incardinated in the diocese of Nacala.
Since ordination he has held the following offices: parish vicar of the Cathedral of Nacala, spiritual assistant of the Legion of Mary, teacher of Portuguese and history, diocesan secretarial official, diocesan head for vocations and for seminarians (1998-2001).
He was awarded a licentiate in sacred liturgy from the Pontifical Saint Anselm Athenaeum in Rome (2001-2004). In addition, he served as parish vicar of the Cathedral of Nacala (2004-2005); vice rector and prefect of studies of the Santo Agostinho Philosophy Seminary of Matola; lecturer in liturgy in the Theological Seminary of Maputo and in the Mother Mary Africa Institute of Higher Education (2005-2011); secretary of the Episcopal Commission for the Liturgy and the Episcopal Commission for the Clergy; rector of the Saint Pius X Interdiocesan Theological Seminary of Maputo (2011-2015), and parish priest in solidum of Nossa Senhora da Assunção in Netia (2015-2017). From 2017 to the present he has served as vicar general of the diocese of Nacala, moderator priest of São João de Deus and rector of the Nossa Senhora Mãe de África Shrine in Alua.
