Quito (Agenzia Fides) - The Social Pastoral Care/Caritas Ecuador celebrated 60 years of service in the Andean country. Parish communities, peasants, indigenous people, women, children, young people, migrants, the elderly and Afro-Ecuadorian peoples, were present (even in a virtual way) at the Eucharistic celebration, with which yesterday, January 27, Cáritas Ecuador celebrated its 60 years of work and accompaniment of Ecuadorians, families and communities most in need.
In the service of the weakest, Caritas, on behalf of the church, pursues the goal of creating "opportunities for change" that is reflected in the promotion of justice and dignity of an excluded population. Cáritas Ecuador accompanies people who belong to particularly vulnerable social groups.
"During the pandemic, to quote a recent event, more than 650,000 people benefited from the accompaniment and supply of food and hygiene items provided and collected through the solidarity of humanitarian workers and donors who are particularly hard hit by the current circumstances and were cared for by Caritas in the most distant places", reads a statement sent to Fides.
The former secretary of Caritas Ecuador and former deputy president of Cáritas Internationalis, Bishop José Vicente Eguiguren, emphasized in a video message on the anniversary of Caritas: "We are celebrating the 60th anniversary while the world is suffering from this pandemic, during which many people are in despair. The greatest challenge that exists in such a difficult year is unity", says the prelate, who invites volunteers, pastoral workers, parish priests, humanitarian workers and donors to participate and celebrate together the feast of Caritas with a commitment towards the weakest.
"Every Christian must find his space, his way of solidarity, the promotion of justice and peace, in an integral way and contribute to the develpoment of humanity. For this to be possible, we must be close to the poor, walk with them, be founders of hope", said the President of Caritas Ecuador, Bishop Julio Parrilla Díaz of Riobamba.
