Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - As the Archdiocese of Caracas announced on Twitter yesterday, Sunday, January 24th, the beatification of José Gregorio Hernández will take place at the end of April. The spokesman for the diocese, Fr. Honegger Molina, announced that the Pope has already signed the decree and that now comes the liturgical act, a necessary step that must be accomplished so that the figure of the Venerable can access the honors of the altars in Venezuela. With this in mind, all Venezuelans are invited to prepare for the liturgical rite of beatification at the end of April 2021 during these months: "This year Venezuela opens the door of hope and joy", affirmed the priest.
Doctor José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros, known as "the doctor of the poor", was born on October 26, 1864 in Isnotú. He dedicated his life to serving the poor and needy. He was remembered as a great medical professional, scientist, thinker and above all a devout believer (see Fides 26/10/2020).
On June 29, 1919, Dr. Hernandez walked into a Caracas pharmacy to buy medicine for an elderly patient he had visited shortly before. On leaving the pharmacy, he was hit by one of the few cars that were on the road at the time. He was taken to the hospital, where he received the anointing of the sick and died shortly after.
