Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) - To mark the anniversary of the 2010 earthquake, the Jesuits working in Haiti published a report on the situation in the tortured country and pointed out ways out of the crisis.
"The profound crisis that Haitian society has been going through for several decades has now reached unimaginable dimensions today", the report says. "There is apparently total chaos ... and there seems to be no way out on the horizon. Uncertainty and suffering unfortunately make many hope less. Our nation is slowly collapsing and with it our institutions and the fundamental values on which our collective existence is based. This sad situation challenges us as men and women, Christians and non-Christians and even more so as Jesuits. This cry of the apostle Paul now resounds more than ever in our minds and hearts and urges us to action: "Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel (1 Cor 9:16)". That is why the Jesuits also show ways out of the crisis in the report and recall in this context the year 1804 and the independence movement: "The tragedy that we are experiencing is the result of human action, so a way out of the crisis and a better future can be made possible through the active action of the sons and daughters of our country. We urge key players, both national and international, to take appropriate decisions, with full respect for fundamental democratic principles, to help save this country. We urge the living forces of the Nation to rise in this historic crossroads of our country and repeat the gesture of 1804 and initiate a rebirth that will restore hope and dignity to our people. We urge the brave and resilient people of Haiti, the proud people even in the midst of adversity, to continue their faith, to remember their rich culture and unique history and to find new reasons for hope and courage needed to realize their dream of a new Haiti". The report sent to Fides is signed by all the Jesuits who work in Haiti. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 16/1/2021)
