EUROPE /ITALY - Young migrants study to become "room assistant"

Syracuse (Agenzia Fides) - On the initiative of the Scalabrini Mission Sisters, a course was launched in Syracuse, Sicily, to train young migrant people to work in the catering trade. A total of 26 young people from Nigeria, Somalia, Ghana, Bangladesh and Gambia will receive training. The program is divided into 2 phases: a theoretical and a practical training. The theoretical part includes Italian lessons with specialist terminology in the field of catering, lessons in civics and basic terms of labor law, lessons in health and hygiene regulations, basic knowledge in the subject of information technology, and theoretical and practical lessons in the work of serving. The practical part includes training internships in restaurants or bars in the Syracuse area. "The pandemic is not stopping us - say Sister Angeljne and Sister Mira in the note sent to Fides - we need regeneration; the education of young people wants to make a contribution to the national economy and we want, despite the crippling global pandemic, to plan a future". At the end of the course, participants who have attended at least 80% of the course and successfully passed a final exam will receive a certificate of attendance.
Taking into account the current health regulations in connection with the coronavirus pandemic, the lessons will initially be held online via the Zoom platform with three weekly sessions of 2 hours each in January and February.
