AFRICA/IVORY COAST - The Church prays for the victims of the post-electoral crisis

Abidjan (Agenzia Fides) - "During the Eucharistic celebrations on Sunday 20 December, in all the parishes of your ecclesiastical district, priests will pray for the eternal rest of the victims of the pre-electoral, electoral and post-electoral violence in October and November on the Ivory Coast", announced, on 17 December, His Exc. Mgr. Ignace Dogbo Bessi, President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of the Ivory Coast (CECI).
"This will be done following the request of the president of the Ivory Coast Democratic Party, president of the coalition of platforms and opposition political parties, who has requested the consent of Cardinal Kutwa, Metropolitan Archbishop of Abidjan, for the authorization of a mass in the national territory", reads the press release signed by the Secretary General of CECI, Fr. Emmanuel Wohi Nin. Monsignor Dogbo asks the Lord that, despite the losses of loved ones, to put light and the strength in everyone to forgive, to bring life back to the country.
Officially 87 people have lost their lives and more than 200 were injured or maimed during the electoral process. In the 31 October elections (see Fides 3/11/2020), President Alassane Ouattara obtained a third term, but his victory was contested by the opposition. (S.S.) (Agenzia Fides, 19/12/2020)
