Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) - The National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) and Caritas Brazil have launched the campaign "SOS Mozambique: Cabo Delgado wants peace". "We are all brothers, part of a family of many, all of humanity. For this reason, distances, customs, differences cannot justify indifference. We are invited to help our brothers and sisters who suffer at all times", exhorted the Archbishop of Belo Horizonte and President of the CNBB, Mgr. Walmor Oliveira de Azevedo, in the face of the sequence of terrorist attacks that have devastated Mozambique, in particular the Cabo Delgado region.
As explained in the press release sent to Fides, the goal is to raise awareness in Brazilian society, in particolar the Christian community, to participate in this campaign. The donations collected will be sent to the province of Cabo Delgado and will be transformed into aid to thousands of families, who fled their villages due to violence, in search of shelter and peace and who now receive assistance from the diocesan Caritas of Pemba.
For three years the province of Cabo Delgado in Mozambique has suffered the effects of war in the region. In this context, about 500,000 people have had to leave their villages in search of safer places. Women, men, children, the elderly flee in fear, travel long distances on foot and by boat, to get to where they can find support. An estimated 2,000 people have already died in the violence in Cabo Delgado.
The Bishop of the diocese of Pemba, Mgr.Luiz Fernando Lisboa, a Brazilian who has lived and worked in Mozambique for 20 years, works through Caritas to mobilize the local and international community so that, hand in hand, they take care of the many people who need care in this context. "It is a very difficult situation, a very strong humanitarian crisis, for which we ask, implore, help and solidarity from the Mozambican community and the international community", says Monsignor Luiz Fernando in the campaign video.
Through the social networks of CNBB and Caritas Brazil you can participate with a donation, until January 31, 2021. Updates on the resources collected and on the situation of the African country can be monitored on the social networks and on the media of the two organizations. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 19/12/2020)
