AMERICA/PERU - "Christmas is sharing": Caritas campaign for communities suffering the consequences of the pandemic

Lima (Agenzia Fides) - The Social Pastoral and Human Dignity (Cáritas-Lima) of the Archbishopric of Lima, together with the RPP group, are promoting the "Christmas is sharing" campaign, which intends to collect food to provide help to fifteen "common canteens" in the poorest areas of Lima. As everywhere in Latin America, people in the Peruvian capital, with its roughly 9 million inhabitants, are suffering from the economic consequences of the pandemic, and around half of the inhabitants live in poverty or misery in the suburbs.
As confirmed by Cinthya Tello, Director of Cáritas Lima, this campaign aims to provide food and supplies for 15 days to 15 communities in extreme poverty which, in the face of the pandemic, have organized themselves since June this year with communal canteens in different areas of Lima. The most sought-after products include non-perishable foods such as pasta, beans, rice, and milk. Freezers are also needed to store food, detergents, cooking utensils, and gas bottles.
In these days Cáritas Peru presented its Social Report 2019. During 2019 it promoted the realization of 44 integral development projects, from which 38,409 vulnerable families across the country benefited, with the support of 24 allied organizations. Furthermore, through its social assistance programs, 167,236 people were supported thanks to national and international donations as part of the social assistance programs.
The report also highlights the work carried out in the "Huellas de Ternura" march (see Fides 04/03/2019), which mobilized and sensitized 6,220 people across the country, to denounce the various forms of violence against children.
