Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) - Father Sylvain Ronald, Scheut Missionaries (CICM), kidnapped last November 10th, was released in the late evening of November 13th at the Champ de Mars, a few meters from the National Palace, in the heart of the capital Port-au-Prince.
The Conference of Haitian religious, which had informed about the kidnapping of the priest (see Fides, 13/11/2020), had implored the kidnappers to release the hostage as the religious congregation to which he belongs did not have the sum required to pay the requested ransom, and had invited the Catholic community to organize a prayer chain for the kidnapped missionary.
Cardinal Chibly Langlois, Bishop of Les Cayes, commented on the kidnapping on 13 November, condemning the violence in the Caribbean and the kidnapping of Father Sylvain. The Cardinal said he was dismayed by the phenomenon of growing insecurity and concerned about the resurgence of banditry in the country. "There are people who are being freed, but there are others who have had their piece stolen, not to mention those who are killed, suffered violence and lose their property". The Cardinal had participated in the fourth Congress of the "National Commission for Justice and Peace", which was held from 9 to 13 November in the city of Papaye (Hinche).
