AFRICA/GHANA - Death of former Ghanaian President Jerry Rawlings

Accra (Agenzia Fides) - Former President of the Republic of Ghana Jerry John Rawlings died at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra on November 12 after a short illness.
73-year-old JJ Rawlings fell ill after his mother's funeral, about three weeks ago. As a former military leader of Ghana, Rawlings led a military coup and led the country from 1981 to 1992. In 1992 he became the first President of the fourth Republic of Ghana for eight years, holding two terms until 2001.
Jerry Rawlings had been hospitalized for about a week for an unknown illness. He is said to have died from complications due to Covid-19, but this has not been confirmed. The former president founded the National Democratic Congress (NDC), currently in opposition.
As Ghana prepares for the December 7 polls to elect the President and Members of Parliament for the next four years, the voice of the late JJ Rawllings will be greatly missed as many Ghanaians believed in him, because they considered him a man of strong courage and a fighter against corruption.
A Catholic, he had confidence in the role of the Church. "The Catholic Church and other formal and traditional churches still maintain a high level of respect and credibility and must speak out", said the former President addressing the Archbishop of Accra, His Exc. Mgr. John Bonaventure Kwofie, during a courtesy visit in March 2019, addressing an appeal to combat the spread of charlatans and scammers posing as religious leaders.
