Maputo (Agenzia Fides) - The governor of the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, Valige Tauabo, denied that more than 50 people were kidnapped and beheaded in the village of Muatide, district of Muidumbe, "on a football field that has become an extermination camp", as reported by the press.
The governor said that in the province he administers there have been no recent massacres by terrorists, arguing that the latest carnage, perpetrated by the Central African Province of the Islamic State (ISCAP).
"The massacre of 53 young people took place on April 6. This is what is in the memory of the province as one of the most serious massacres by these terrorists", clarified the governor of Cabo Delgado, adding that the carnage is due to the fact that "the victims refused to be recruited into the ranks of armed group"
Valige Tauabo added that "the violence of the jihadists worries us a lot, because, in fact, terrorists' raids are causing a lot of physical and moral damage, as terrorists burn houses, destroy public goods and cause mourning". According to the government, despite the spread of terrorist attacks and the isolation of some parts of the provinces, no territory is under the control of the armed group.
The Bishop of Pemba, His Exc. Mgr.Luiz Fernando Lisboa, however, says that the war has intensified a lot, for example, in the last month alone, 13 to 14,000 people have arrived in the Metuge camps. "It is a dramatic situation for the people fleeing the war, their villages, their islands. Just to give you an idea, in the past two days, the Muidumbe district has suffered seven attacks in seven villages. People are forced to sleep in the bush. Those who flee by boat spend up to 3, 4, 5 days at sea, and arrive hungry and dehydrated", the Bishop reports. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 12/11/2020)
