Tegucigalpa (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishops' Conference of Honduras have launched an appeal asking for solidarity due to the serious consequences that the tropical Eta phenomenon is leaving in the Country, after having already caused extensive material damage and killed eight people.
The document released by the Bishops of Honduras, sent to Fides begins with the invocation "Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth" (Psalm 124, 8) in which the Pastors of the Catholic Church urge the population not to take risks and to follow the instructions of government authorities, in order to avoid any kind of misfortune.
Moreover, in the midst of this meteorological emergency, they urge us not to forget Covid-19, which is still present, with a very high risk of contagion.
"Let us pay the necessary attention to comply with the basic provisions on biosecurity", the text states. The Bishops then thank the parish priests for the pastoral care they are giving to the communities and ask to increase their commitment in these difficult circumstances, together with the social pastoral teams, to learn about the disasters that the hurricane is producing in their parishes.
With its passage in Honduras, Eta leaves an impressive destruction: 6 rivers have flooded and 2 ports have been closed because they were destroyed, La Ceiba and Tela, as well as a huge number of houses which have been completely destroyed, city streets transformed into rivers, avalanches that fell on the roads inside the country.
