AMERICA/NICARAGUA - Towards the presidential elections with a divided opposition: Bishop of Matagalpa asks for more humility

Matagalpa (Agenzia Fides) - "Humble people do not want to be at the center of attention, the humble do not try to attract attention because they are not interested in attracting attention. When humble people do good, they do it in silence", said Mgr. Rolando Álvarez, Bishop of the diocese of Matagalpa, during his homily on November 2, referring to the position of the opposition with a view to leaving the National Alliance. The prelate underlined that the opposition lives "in controversies, in protagonism, in the search for personal or group interests, in the thirst to be protagonists, in offenses, aggressions".
Bishop Álvarez called on all Nicaraguans to take inspiration from the Beatitudes: "those who weep, who hunger and thirst for justice, all of them will be blessed and fulfilled".
"It is not enough to show solidarity in a video or in a photo or television commercial with those who are suffering. It is necessary to cry with those who cry, laugh with those who laugh, suffer with those who suffer, rejoice with those who rejoice, with those who thirst for justice, in order to really understand those who suffer from injustice, to put themselves in their shoes and to fight for and with them", he stressed.
Since October 26, the Civic Alliance has abandoned the National Coalition in order to "propose a unified and inclusive political and electoral platform". Immediately afterwards also representatives of civil society and academic sectors also distanced themselves from the platform.
