Washington (Agenzia Fides) - With a view to World Mission Sunday 2020, the Pontifical Mission Societies in the United States (MISSIO) recall that this event will be celebrated on October 18, together with missionaries around the world, with a worldwide Eucharistic celebration and the solidarity collection of offerings. The goal is to support more than 1,000 local Churches in Asia and Africa, on the Pacific islands and in some areas of Latin America and Europe. Through the actions of these Churches and their testimony of Christ, the poor receive practical help and experience God's love and mercy, hope and peace.
On the PMS homepage for World Mission Sunday, you will find the material they have prepared: the history of World Mission Day, parish resources, promotional material, the Message of Pope Francis, educational resources and a section on the theme "Prayer and the Bible". The sections are in two languages, English and Spanish. A number of testimonies and examples are available in the form of blogs dealing with topics such as Mission and Scripture, Preaching Mission, and How well do you know your faith?.
In addition, the Pontifical Mission Societies, in collaboration with the United States Catholic Missions Association (USCMA) and well-known documentary filmmaker and producer Andrew Muscato, are launching a new streaming series entitled "How Mission Can Help Us Navigate Challenges Today" . "With this initiative, we are delighted, together with the various components of our mission family, to offer a meeting place for those who are facing problems at this difficult time", said Fr. Andrew Small, OMI, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in the United States. "As a church and community, we can only meet the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic if we address them together".
Each program aims to be a stimulus for our current daily commitment, and contain presentations, conversations, dialogues and online exchanges led by the missionaries, who can speak on various topics. The free streaming series, presented via Zoom, will cover topics that will have these themes: "How to stay resilient"; "Coping with trauma and keeping hope alive by focusing on our relationships"; "The importance of prayer and the practice of solidarity".
