Managua (Agenzia Fides) - The parish of Sagrado Corazón de Jesús in the neighborhood of Monseñor Lezcano, in Managua, suffered serious damage due to a tornado that hit the area yesterday morning.
The tornado occurred on Thursday, September 17, and caused severe consequences to 72 homes in four neighborhoods in Managua's District II, as reported by the authorities from the Mayor's Office in Managua. Of the 72 houses, five completely collapsed, Fidel Moreno, general secretary of the mayor's office, told official media. He also added that at least 14 people were injured.
At the time of the tornado, the parish priest, Father Sebastián Zeledón, was in his room inside the church of the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, when he heard what he called "an earthquake-like sound". Regarding the damage to the church, the priest said that although he cannot calculate the exact costs, the greatest damage was suffered by the roof of the church. "The Lord himself will help us to carry on this work. We will campaign for everyone to collaborate and then we will go on", said the parish priest.
The parishioners and those who live around the church showed up to help remove the zinc plates that had fallen off the roof and clean up the sediments caused by the rain. During the morning, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Managua, Cardinal Leopoldo José Brenes, visited the church to see for himself the damage and ensure his support for the parish priest and the community.
