Rome (Agenzia Fides) - On the evening of July 27, Don Antonio Ugenti of the Saint Paul Society (SSP), who was the Director of Agenzia Fides in the period 1993-1994, died at Umberto I hospital in Rome. In March he had been tested positive for Covid-19. Born on August 25, 1945 in Toritto (Bari), he entered the Saint Paul Society in 1956 and was ordained a priest on June 28, 1973.
Dynamic, full of initiatives and enthusiasm, he loved journalism: he leaves 102 publications of different kinds. He wrote countless articles for the paoline magazines and other ecclesial magazines, taught religion in three high schools, collaborated with the Pontifical Council for Culture and was chaplain at the Pomezia office of La Sapienza University.
Speaking at the annual General Assembly of the Pontifical Mission Societies, on May 10, 1993, he presented himself in this way: "I have come to Agenzia Fides upon the request of Cardinal Tomko, with the with the task of radically restructuring and relaunching it professionally, a fascinating, but also very difficult challenge". He dedicated his period of work at Fides with determination and commitment.
In the editorial of the first issue of the agency's bulletin "completely new, in the graphic layout and content of the information", entitled "The Church is alive", on 11 October 1993, he wrote: "The organizational and editorial effort was enormous, with the aim of offering information service, as complete and quick as possible". He continued: "Despite being specifically missionary, Agenzia Fides wants to be open to the whole ecclesial reality, of which it will report the concerns and problems, achievements and activities. It intends to present the Church for what it is: a living and dynamic reality, all aimed at bringing God to men and men to God". (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 30/7/2020)
