Lima (Agenzia Fides) - On Monday 27 July, Mgr. Miguel Cabrejos, president of the Episcopal Conference, celebrated Mass and Te Deum in the Cathedral of Trujillo, on the occasion of the 199th anniversary of the Independence of Peru. In his homily, he said: "This national holiday comes amid a serious health crisis that is causing many families to suffer. The only way to deal with it is to follow government regulations and unite together to help the weakest".
Then he added: "This national holiday opens an election year. Next year we will celebrate national holidays with a new government. Therefore it is necessary to take on responsibilities and commitments so that, in light of current circumstances, the electoral process can be carried out in the fairer and more transparent way. The future of the country will depend on the decision made by millions of Peruvians. We hope that our political class will live up to the circumstances and can contribute, with ideas and programs, to the development of the country and to help millions of people living in poverty".
Peru is experiencing a lockdown of its economy, like other Latin American countries, due to the Covid pandemic and also suffers from the collapse of health facilities due to the large number of cases recorded: 390 thousand with 18,418 deaths. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 28/7/2020)
