Quito (Agenzia Fides) - "In the face of the scandalous proliferation of corruption cases involving our Ecuadorian society, just when our people suffer the serious consequences of the Covid 19 pandemic, the Ecuadorian Episcopal Conference (EEC) wishes to express what follows", thus begins the public letter that Fides received from the Bishops of this country.
A series of points of reflection and denunciation are listed, such as closeness to the people for the death of many people who have been abandoned to their fate; corruption that directly damages the poor without having mercy on their situation; the right to life in a country where health care has become a horrendous trade; the lack of medical resources due to corrupt mismanagement.
The EEC vigorously denounces: "corruption is a crime that condemns many poor people to death"... "steals hope from a people in need of work and bread". Furthermore, the text continues, "corruption is a serious sin and a moral disorder incompatible with the Christian faith".
In conclusion, the Bishops stress: "A population that has dignity cannot become complicit in corruption and impunity". (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 1/7/2020)
