Chocò (Agenzia Fides) - As part of the patronal feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Patroness of the diocese of Quibdó, Mgr. Juan Carlos Barreto Barreto, strongly denounced the precariousness of the health system and social indiscipline in the department of Chocó in times of the pandemic. The reflection was expressed during the Eucharist celebrated on Saturday 20 June in a moment of prayer lived also in the dioceses of Istimina-Tadó and Apartadó.
In this circumstance, the Bishop of Quibdó said: "We unite to implore the Immaculate Heart of Mary to help us in this difficult moment that Chocó is going through due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are close to 1,000 cases of infected people in the department and 35 people have already died. Our health system is collapsing, unfortunately the institutional weakness for prevention and detention has not been efficient and social indiscipline aggravates the situation".
Taking inspiration from the reading of the day, from the evangelist Saint Luca, the Bishop proposed a reflection that touched on four topics: personal care, health system, mental health and spiritual health.
In Colombia the celebrations for the Sacred Heart of Jesus and for the Immaculate Heart of Mary are deeply felt and involve a large part of the population. In the face of the collapse of the health system, generated by the spread of the coronavirus in this region, the Catholic Church and organizations of the local population have urgently appealed to the international community for the necessary support to overcome this dramatic moment. (See Fides, 10/6/2020). Regarding Covid, Colombia has registered 77,115 cases and more than 2,500 deaths. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 26/6/2020)
