AMERICA/BRAZIL - “Fraternity and people with a disability”: March 1 launching of 2006 Campaign organised by the Catholic Bishops of Brazil and the Office for the annual Lenten Fraternity Campaign

Belo Horizonte (Fides Service) - The Catholic Bishops of Brazil and the Office for the annual Lenten Fraternity Campaign have organised the 2006 campaign on the theme Fraternity and people with a disability with the motto “Arise, stand up!”(Mk 3,3)
Groups of persons with a disability and institutions of assistance, as well as experts and pedagogues helped to promote the project which will be launched on 1 March in the archdiocese of Belo Horizonte. The theme is of enormous social interest. Disabilities can be physical, sensorial or cerebral: deafness, blindness, muteness, mental or motory deficiency .
The initiatives is an important moment for evangelisation and its objective is to promote sentiments of authentic brotherhood and a culture of social solidarity in keeping with the Gospel teaching. The 2006 Campaign is an opportunity to increase awareness of the difficulties encountered by persons with a disability often subjected to isolation, discrimination and prejudice.
