Wednesday, 10 June 2020

Kassala (Agenzia Fides) - The spreading of Chikungunya, the pandemic fever that caused the death of so many people in the country just a couple of years ago (see Fides, 15/11/2015) is causing concern in the State of Kassala, on the border with Eritrea. Local health authorities have expressed concerns that the disease may become a new epidemic and have reinforced anti-Covid-19 preventive measures.
In a note sent to Agenzia Fides, we read that the Technical Committee for Health Emergencies in Kassala recommended the extension of the lockdown to stop the spread of the coronavirus for another ten days compared to those scheduled. Markets will only open from 6 to 12 and transportation remains prohibited. The total number of cases of Covid-19 in the state of Kassala is 53, 33 in the homonymous city, 19 in New Halfa and one in Reefi Kassala.
As stated by radio station Dabanga, in the State of Khartoum, the Ministry of Health is monitoring the conditions of over two thousand people who are under quarantine in their respective homes. According to what was sent to Agenzia Fides, the Joint Central Coronavirus Emergency Room of Khartoum has decided to distribute additional supports to the people monitored, among these food baskets.
In the Red Sea State, activists called for a complete lockdown and a ban on travel between areas in the state after the death of two patients and the confirmation of nine new coronavirus cases just a few days ago.
The authorities of El Gedaref have decided to reopen the main markets of the state from 6 am to 3 pm. The High Committee for Local Health Emergencies has ordered to maintain social distancing and wear face masks. It stated that any violation will be punished, that a curfew will remain in effect from 6 pm to 6 in the morning, and the ban on transportation between areas in the state and to other states will continue. Farmers will be allowed to move between areas with an official permit granted by local authorities. (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 10/6/2020)
