AFRICA/MALAWI - Personal protective equipment to mission hospitals

Madisi (Agenzia Fides) - "Most of the population of Malawi is engaged in informal work, and is the most exposed sector to contracting Covid 19", says to Agenzia Fides the national coordinator of the Catholic development Commission in Malawi CADECOM, Chimwemwe Phiri, upon the delivery of personal protective equipment (PPE) to the Catholic hospitals "Mtengowanthenga" and "Madisi Mission Hospital", thanks to solidarity contributions sent from Australia. "Thanks to the donations received in this moment of global crisis - continues Phiri - we feel compelled to help our Catholic health centers".
"With the help of these devices we feel more protected and we can work without fear of contracting the virus", says Sister Eva Kangaude, at the head of the mission hospital of Mtengowanthenga. "The donation has increased the hope and confidence of healthcare professionals on the important role that sees them engaged above all in this phase".
Fr. Henry Zulu, Director of Social Development of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe, also thanked the Australian government which, through Caritas Australia, supported CADECOM in the purchase of PPE.
Catholic hospitals offer high quality health care and specialized diagnoses, medical treatments and consultancy services in favor of the population living in rural areas and people in need, in a transparent and responsible way. In a country where diseases such as malaria, cholera and typhoid fever are widespread, the reliable healthcare provided by the network of mission hospitals is crucial, especially in time of pandemic. In the face of the exponential growth of the population with very low incomes, the public health system appears insufficient.
