San Salvador (Agenzia Fides) - On the solemnity of Pentecost, the Bishops of El Salvador sent a message of hope and closeness to the people of God in this period of pandemic, urging the authorities for a co-responsible dialogue that would allow them to face the national crisis. "This is the fundamental thought of my preaching: nothing matters to me as much as human life". Inspired by St. Oscar Romero’s sentence, the Bishops of El Salvador expressed their closeness in this period of trial in the face of the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. "Because nothing matters to the Church as much as human life - they write -, that during the years of the war denounced the abuses against the dignity of the human person and announced the Father's plan tirelessly: to reconcile men with God and with each other".
Regarding the State, the Bishops comment: "What does the country need to achieve a dignified life for every citizen", faced with the consequences of the pandemic on the most vulnerable sectors of the country. "Layoffs, unemployment, hunger, lack of work threaten many of our compatriots", denounce the Bishops. Faced with this reality, in particular they appeal to "leaders and private companies" to commit themselves so that no one is excluded from national life.
In Pentecost the Salvadoran Bishops saw the action of the Spirit of God in history, through the people, who in these times of crisis showed the best of themselves: "We express our gratitude to the medical and health personnel who take care of the sick, fighting against the coronavirus. We congratulate everyone for their efforts also to help our poorest brothers, take care of the elderly and children".
Finally, the Episcopate invites us to pray so that God grants everyone, even the leaders, the grace of communion and dialogue. "In this way - they conclude - we will live in peace, in brotherhood and in unity". (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 3/6/2020)
