Managua (Agenzia Fides) - On Sunday the Nicaraguan Episcopal Conference (CEN) invited the regime of Daniel Ortega and the opposition to create consensus in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, to avoid a "greater human catastrophe", in a country characterized by political polarization.
The call comes when the COVID-19 contagion curve shows a sharp increase, while Ortega insists on giving priority to economy and the opposition criticizes the regime for not having taken preventive measures in the face of the pandemic.
"We urge rulers and all sectors of the country to open up in alliances and consensus, to seek and find common alternatives and solutions that prevent us from further human catastrophes", said CEN, in a message "to the people of good will".
The difficulty for a consensus between Ortega-Murillo’s regime and other social sectors was not possible due to the popular outbreak against Ortega in April 2018, which left hundreds of dead, prisoners or missing persons and over 100,000 people in exile.
The opposition disagrees with Ortega's point of view, who insisted on the fact that there will be no restrictions because economy cannot stop.
"Nothing is more important than life, life above everything. The problems that arise after the pandemic are many", writes the Episcopate, where more than 58.5% profess the Catholic religion.
According to the regime's data, only 279 people have been infected so far, with 17 deaths in Nicaragua. While the Citizen Observatory (independent body that enjoys greater credibility than the Ministry of Health), reports at least 2,323 cases, with 465 deaths.
"The most important thing now is to protect life and that everyone does what is necessary and possible, preserve and protect the lives of others, the strongest, the most generous and compassionate, to endure the weakest, those who have the riches are asked to multiply their works of mercy to share them with those who have nothing", said the statement of CEN.
