Madre de Dios (Agenzia Fides) - With the aim of spreading and strengthening the minimum information needed on Covid-19 among the indigenous peoples of the Amazon, a team of bilingual interpreters, communicators and educators have released an animated micro-series on the impacts of the virus in communities.
Given the spread of the pandemic in the Amazon, indigenous specialists and organizations have warned the world of possible ethnocide among indigenous peoples because of their extremely vulnerable conditions.
Even the Amazonian leaders themselves have denounced the governments of various countries for their inaction in the face of the Covid-19 threat, stating that in the midst of the health crisis they have no health personnel or medical institutions in their communities.
Having said that, indigenous peoples have adopted their preventive measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in their territories, almost all communities have chosen to isolate themselves. However, it is inevitable that they will be looking for essential food items.
To accomplish the animation, the multidisciplinary team responsible for the production have identified these problems which will be seen in the 4 episodes of the micro-series, produced in 4 indigenous languages: Asháninka, Shipibo Conibo, Kukama Kukamiria and Nomatsigenga.
This initiative joins the call of the various Latin American episcopal conferences which share territories in the Amazon such as Brazil (see Fides, 5/5/2020) and Peru (see Fides, 22/4/2020).
The mini series will be broadcast on the internet, on Youtube, an instrument that has occurred as a means of communication between groups also in the Amazon territories.
The latest World Health Organization (WHO) report ensured that although the number of cases is decreasing in Europe, more cases are reported every day from Eastern Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia and the Americas. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 07/5/2020)
