Coquimbo (Agenzia Fides) - "The crisis, caused by the consequences of coronavirus all over the world, is of proportions yet to be defined, and unfortunately it will affect the poorest, most defenseless and excluded of society. In our country, in addition to the great challenges resulting from the social crisis, there are now others that the pandemic is already causing. In our region of Coquimbo, for years we have been hit hard by the scarcity of water, even more the sisters and brothers who cultivate the fields and others who dedicate themselves to cattle breeding. The situation that regional tourism is experiencing is also worrying, given the low number of visitors in the area. Many people who take care of welcoming them to hotels and other structures, consider with concern the stability of their source of work": with these words, Archbishop René Rebolledo Salinas, Archbishop of La Serena, addressed the community in a message for the Labor Day.
The reflection of Archbishop Rebolledo Salinas underlines the difficult situation of this part of the Chilean territory, which for some time has been experiencing many hardships in the social sphere. The Prelate continues: "Once again, I express my closeness to those who suffer from these serious crises mentioned. I invite the pilgrim Church in the Coquimbo region to show its effective solidarity at all times. In various ways we are strengthening our Archdiocesan Commission of pastoral social-Caritas to meet those who are most in need of our help right now. For the missionary disciples of the Lord, it is even more demanding: if you do not love the brother you see, you cannot love God you do not see. The command that the Lord has given us is that whoever loves God also loves his brother (1 Jn 4: 20-21). Solidarity and concern for those who find themselves in difficulty must commit us all, it is a duty that springs from the very heart of the Gospel", concludes the Archbishop.
Chile is experiencing the pandemic with great suffering: about 20,000 cases and 260 deaths for Covid 19 have affected the South American country in a period of serious political and social crisis and a lot of tension. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 4/5/2020)
