Lomè (Agenzia Fides) - The Togolese government has closed schools, cities, borders and airports as preventive measures for the spread of Covid-19. The first case was confirmed at the beginning of March 2020. The response of the Bishops of the Country was immediate, giving precise indications to all the faithful. In a message sent to Agenzia Fides, the Bishops invite the entire population "to scrupulously follow the guidelines of the health authorities and the measures that will be taken to prevent and combat the Coronavirus" and appeal "to everyone's sense of responsibility and civilization for the good of all".
Catholic schools and universities, in compliance with government recommendations, have suspended all activities and closed their doors. Seminaries are closed until further notice. All masses are suspended while the first indications for Holy Week are: the Chrism Mass will be broadcast live on radio by the Catholic broadcaster in each diocese, and a delegation of 40 priests from the diaconates will concelebrate with the Bishop. The practice of giving the sacraments is temporarily suspended, except for the sacrament of confession in which the distance of one meter between the penitent and the priest will be respected.
