Santo Domingo (Agenzia Fides) - "We are convinced that, without a deep love for the homeland, it is impossible to carry out a nation project that reflects the dreams of our founding fathers. Without having a fixed gaze on Christian, patriotic and libertarian ideals, everyone could develop individual projects, selfish and distant from national interests". This is what the Dominican Episcopal Conference (EDC) writes in its message entitled "Let's strengthen our patriotic conscience: let us value our national symbols", published on the occasion of the 176th anniversary of national independence, on February 27, underlining that "this message is motivated by an identity and a weak respect, on some occasions, towards our national symbols".
In the message, sent to Agenzia Fides, the Bishops recall the fundamental freedoms established in the Dominican Constitution, such as the free development of the personality, the freedom of conscience, transit, association, assembly, expression, information, business and of worship, and stress that the value of freedom is threatened by complaints about freedom of expression, impunity, patronage, poor quality of education, lack of job opportunities, poverty, among other things. They therefore stress that "there is authentic freedom when every Dominican can live with dignity".
"To way in which we strengthen our patriotic identity, we can enhance the essential part of the homeland that is its population", write the Bishops, explaining that "our flag, our coat of arms and the national anthem, are a living expression of sovereignty and the independence of the Dominican people and its history; essential symbols that mark its identity and culture, as well as representing their hopes, aspirations, desires for progress and peace".
The Episcopal Conference therefore asks all fathers, mothers and educators to commit themselves so that young people are given a deep patriotic feeling and thus become men and women who give the best part of their life to the country. Finally, they invite all Dominicans to "put their talents at the service of strengthening a Dominican Republic that reflects the highest values of the human being. The Fathers of the Home land left us with a legacy of integrity, honesty and sacrifice that must mark the morale of each of its citizens". (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 28/2/2020)
