Thursday, 20 February 2020 pontifical mission societies   missionary animation   extraordinary missionary month

Warsaw (Agenzia Fides) - The annual meeting of the National Council of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS), which took place from 17 to 19 February, has just ended, with the participation of 23 diocesan Directors of the PMS and members of the National Direction for a total of 33 people. The meeting is not only a fulfillment of the norms of the statute for the presentation of annual reports on individual projects and on the financial statement, but it is also a time dedicated to prayer, sharing of missionary experiences and the inclusion of the priests responsible for missionary animation in the country.
The meetings are organized every year in a different place, to give participants the opportunity to learn about the reality of new dioceses. This year the Council gathered at the African Mission Center in Borzęcin Duży, near Warsaw, in the archdiocese of Warsaw.
The members of the National Council, chaired by Mgr. Tomasz Atlas, PMS National Director, summarized the experience of the Extraordinary Missionary Month celebrated in October 2019 by the will of Pope Francis, and discussed the preparation of the next National Synod of Children, which will take place in 2021 at the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University. Mgr. Atlas recalled that the year 2022 will be full of anniversaries: the 400th anniversary of the institution of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Nations (1622-2022), the 200th anniversary of the foundation of the Society of the Propagation of the Faith (1822-2022) and the 100th anniversary of the recognition of "Pontifical" of the PMS. "I encourage everyone to feel even more involved in the mission. I am full of enthusiasm because I am sure that the Church in Poland will celebrate these events in the best way", concluded Mgr. Atlas.
The meeting of the National Council ended with the Mass presided by Card. Kazmierz Nycz, Archbishop of Warsaw. In his homily the Cardinal underlined the importance of the work of the Polish missionaries and of the role of the Pontifical Mission Societies, through the directors responsible for the missions in their dioceses. Referring to the reading of the day, taken from the Letter of St. James, which states that "faith without works is dead", the Cardinal encouraged us not to stop at observation and awareness of the need for missionary work, but to put in action the words and to evangelize beginning with ourselves.
