VATICAN - "Cordial meeting" between Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi

Munich (Agenzia Fides) - Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States, and Chinese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, met in Munich and had a talk yesterday afternoon, Friday 14 February, within the context of the Munich Security Conference 2020, the annual conference on global security policies that has been taking place every year in Munich since 1963. It was the first official meeting of this kind between a representative of the Holy See and a member of the government of the People's Republic of China.
"During the discussion, which took place in a cordial atmosphere", reports the press release issued by the Vatican Press Office late on Friday, February 14, "they discussed the contacts that have taken place between the two countries “which have developed positively over time". In particular, "the importance of the Provisional Agreement on the appointment of Bishops, signed last 22 September was highlighted, and the “willingness to continue the institutional dialogue at the bilateral level to promote the life of the Catholic Church and the good of the Chinese people" .
The meeting also expressed common appreciation "for the efforts being made to eradicate the coronavirus epidemic as well as solidarity with the affected population".
