Addis Ababa (Agenzia Fides) - Will there be concrete actions for the well-being of African populations or will it be a routine event as always? This is the question that many Africans are asking at the end of the 33rd Summit that the African Heads of State and Government have just concluded in Addis Ababa on the demanding theme: "Silencing weapons to create conditions conducive to the development of the Africa". "So far, security summits in Africa have followed and multiplied with poor results". This is the comment by Fr. Donald Zagore, theologian of the Society for African Missions, on the drama of African precariousness.
"The African populations, in particular those of sub-Saharan Africa, in addition to being plagued by extreme poverty, live in terror of not being able to see the beginning of the day due to the violence that prevails in all forms, djihadism, terrorism, dictatorship".
"The response to the security crisis in Africa, even before being military, must be political", underlines Zagore. "The security crisis in Africa originates in the establishment and consolidation of anti-democratic, totalitarian and dictatorial political regimes. Many of our politicians use violence and terror as a means of government. Entire populations are massacred only to protect mere political interests".
Father Zagore concludes by saying: "Our continent today needs a political conscience in love with democracy, capable of concrete actions. Poverty and security are two interdependent realities. We cannot talk about development without having first taken up the security challenge and vice versa. Africa's development essentially passes through its security and through political action that truly sees the common good". (DZ/AP) (Agenzia Fides, 12/2/2020)
